Women: Before Buying Your New Bike

Advice for Women Motorcyclists

If you are thinking of joining the one in ten motorcyclists who are women, you should be aware of some thing to look out for in choosing the bike which will be right for you. Your lifestyle and what type of riding you will be doing are important questions to be considered before going to a dealership to purchase your first motorcycle. If you are planning on going on long tours, one type of bike will be right for you, but if off road riding is your interest, a quite different model will be appropriate. And if you plan on using your bike for commuting to work, still another will be the one.

Most dealers will honestly try to be helpful in guiding you to the right purchase, but don’t forget that the dealer wants to sell you a bike, so you should not allow yourself to be pressured to buy a bike that might not suit your needs. Before making any decision you should be sure to test the bike out to make sure that you are comfortable and that it seems right for your purpose. Don’t be satisfied with looking at only one bike. Ask if there are other models in stock which might suit your needs. Ask if the dealer has any used motorcycles for sale which might be right for you.

Also, before making any purchase, you should ask the dealer about what will be involved in maintaining the bike. Some machines are notorious for requiring heavy maintenance.

Other considerations are making sure that the seat is set at a comfortable height, the handlebars are appropriate for your body shape and size, that the bike is light enough for you to manage and that you are comfortable with the foot controls. The height of the seat should allow you to place both feet squarely on the ground. Be sure to wear the same footwear you will be riding with--always boots, never sneakers!

Caution is the order of the day when you decide to take the plunge and make that big purchase. If you have a friend who is an experienced biker, the advice that he or she can give you will be invaluable.

It is well worth the extra time that it will take to be sure that you become the proud owner of a motorcycle which is right for you. It will pay off in many happy hours with the wind in your face and the enjoyment of the camaraderie which goes with the biking experience.
